This is the first Nikkor lens that equipped with VR (Vibration Reduction) technology.

The VR works wonderfully.

Pros:

  • Nice range: 80-400mm

  • VR, and it works

  • Not too heavy

  • Cons:

  • AF is slow! I wish it has AF-S

  • Slow lens too, F/4.5-5.6. This used to be not a problem to me, when I don't have any pro quality lenses. Now as I have more and more F/2.8 glasses, I am sick on this.

  • Optical quality is average, especially on the long side (focal length beyond 300mm).

  • Pricy. I think Nikon charged a premium on this lens for being the first lens in their lenses line-up that comes with VR. However, compares to the other VR lenses and also its IS counterpart from Canon camp, it is too expensive.

  • Tripod collar is shaky, so I ended up replacing it with a dedicated tripod collar from Kirk Photo. The NC80-400 works wonderfully, it also gives more stable and comfortable support when handholding the lens. But this does not come with a cost -- now I can't reverse the lens hood when I store the lens in my cama

Overall, I will rate this lens to 3.5-4 stars.
